Tenuta di Valgiano: Making the wine with a good vibe of nature
Tenuta di Valgiano is situated on the south-facing, basin-shaped part of the Lucca hills between 230 and 270 meters above sea level, where vines and olives flourish in the unique conditions of the mid-hill area. The proximity of Tyrrhenian coast underlines Mediterranean climatic conditions, where considerable amounts of light foster excellent polyphenolic ripening. The vineyards stand on a terrace of pebbles and clayey “albarese” rocks with a density of 5,700 vines per hectare.
Organic and biodynamic farming has been adopted: sowing of various herbs and green manure, clay, copper and sulphur treatment, biological action against parasites, and careful management of the leaf canopy.
In the cellar, every effort is made to respect the characteristics of the grapes through: protection from oxidation, movement of grapes and wine by gravity, strict temperature control during all stages of the process from winemaking to ageing in casks or bottles.

Moreover, apart from minimal amounts of sulphur, no other additives or artificial concentrators are used. The integrity achieved is a synonym for wines with great potential and aromatic power: in short, Valgiano wines.
This kind of ethical approach to agriculture being practiced in Valgiano followed by careful mastering of the wine in the cellars deserves the highest reward possible, especially during the time when agriculture is seen mostly in terms of profits/investments.
One of the owners of the estate, who also manages the vineyards and creates the wine is Saverio Petrilli. This noble winemaker is known as one of the best specialists in biodynamics not only in Tuscany, but probably in entire Italy. While being asked by visitors about the head-statue crowning one of the oldest Valgiano vineyards Scasso dei Cesari, Saverio jokes that this is a statue of Rudolf Steiner, the man who considered to be a “father” of biodynamics. Contrary to his esoteric “predecessor” Saverio has proved in practice positive effects of biodynamic methods.
