Tenuta di Ghizzano: Made by Lady
The estate’s roots go back as far as the 14th century, when the Venerosi Pesciolini family came to Ghizzano, a small village in the hills halfway between Florence and Pisa. Since that time vines and olive trees were the heart of the activities on the various farms, which also characterize the estate today.
For centuries, production took the safe and certain path of tradition, which was followed until the 1980s, when wine growing in Tuscany was faced with serious problems that seemed to be irreversible.
It was then that Pierfrancesco Venerosi Pesciolini decided to mark a turning point; he intuited that the production of quality wines was the only road that could be taken to protect an agricultural area that had reached the end.
The challenge was to produce fine wines, perhaps in small quantities, which would satisfy a market that had been revolutionised compared to the past. The challenge was successfully met and the rest is recent history.
The aim today is to continue to produce quality wines which respect the unique expression of the territory. Nowadays the estate is run by daughter of Pierfrancesco – Ginevra Venerosi Pesciolini. She calls herself a “natural winemaker”, what according to her means “allowing wines to express the terroir as purely and as honestly as possible”. That is the reason why she started her way towards the biodynamic viticulture in 2006 after having already practiced organic agriculture since 2003.
“To use as less additives as possible and as little manipulation as I can both in the vineyards and in the cellar” is another statement, which emphasizes the way chosen by estate. Ginevra’s intellectual charm combined with her enthusiasm and incredible energy inspired the creators of this website to mark the wines produced by female run estates with the sign MADE BY LADY.
